The procedure is not painful once anesthesia is delivered. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and it is so comfortable that you can watch TV, read a book or talk to your friends on the phone while it is been performed.
The blood supply of the scalp is so great that it sustains the growth of newly transplant grafts at one time. However, if the grafts are too large or if the sites are placed too close together then the blood supply can be overwhelmed which might result in poor growth. Blood flow also gets compromised by sun exposure and smoking.
Quite similar to cosmetic surgery, hair transplant is the perfect solution to baldness. In this treatment, surgeons take hair follicles from the back or sides of your scalp and plant them into the empty area. The results are often effective as well as permanent.
The donor hair available to patients during a lifetime is limited and we have to make the correct choice to ensure we select the best strategy to make sure the donor hair is used wisely over a patient’s lifespan. This is crucial to ensure patients gain the best result possible and be educated regarding the potential for future hair loss.
The cost of the procedure depends on the number of grafts and the complexity of the area to be transplanted. All costs quoted include check-ups and post-operative medications. Repair cases are complex and a specialty at our clinic. Due to the challenging nature of corrective surgery we have to examine patients in detail before providing an exact cost estimate.
In certain cases we can transplant without cutting the hair short depending on the number of grafts required. However, in the majority of cases we do cut the hair short to gain the maximum quality grafts possible.
We always advise arranging a personal consultation as there are many variables to investigate including your age, family history of hair loss, and type of hair loss. These factors determine your overall suitability for treatment.
The transplanted hair will begin to shed at 3-6 weeks post procedure and will then take a further 2-4 months to start re-growing. At around the 6 month stage we expect the regrowth to be at the half way stage and the final result is achieved at 12-14 months. The progress can vary and we recommend you attend monthly check ups to review progress.
Shock loss is the loss of pre-existing or transplanted hair due to the trauma of a surgical procedure. The incidences of shock loss are rare and any hair loss caused is temporary and normal growth returns after a period of 1-3 months. Shock loss is a potential side effect of transplantation and is minimised by the expertise of our vastly experienced medical team.
We recommend that you take at least one full day off work after the surgery. After that point, it is a matter of personal choice. Bear in mind that there will be some swelling and scabbing. Swelling can be avoided by using ice packs. Scabbing, however, will most likely be visible. A loose fitting hat or cap may be worn to hide them
PRP is an autologous preparation of blood plasma with platelets. It contains growth factors and other bioactive proteins that aid in wound healing. In order to obtain it, a patient?s blood is spun in a centrifuge that separates the solid from liquid components. Some hair transplant surgeons use PRP in either by, storing the grafts until they are placed on the scalp, or by injecting PRP into the scalp prior to the placement of grafts
Basically, the transplanted hair is the hair from the back of the head. Even though it is transplanted, it will still have the same life span. Normally, a hair follicle sheds every three to six years and then grows back from the same root. The transplanted hair continues the same life circle.
It is very very safe procedure but pre anesthetic checkup is important, patients with diabetes, hyper tension, chronic kidney diseases and chronic heart diseases needs proper evaluation but exclusion is not always necessary.
Each cell of the body has a coding system, one of which is called HLA coding, these codes help body to differentiate between its own and other cells. Now when the hair roots which have live cells are implanted from someone else, the body recognizes it and starts attacking it, which kills the implanted hairs, were as when its own roots are implanted body can recognize that it is its own and accepts it. Now the question arises why does liver and kidney from others are transplanted then and it works fine the entire life? Most of us do not know that after each kidney or liver transplant, the recipient is asked to take some medications throughout the life to prevent body from killing the transplanted organ, these medicines are called immun0-suppressent. These medications have huge and serious side effects (Including hair loss as well), therefore in a cosmetic procedure like hair transplant we do not want patients to take such medicines and thus it is avoided.
